Year 3 Roman Day 22nd Apr 2026

Year 3 launched their new History unit, Emperors and Empires, with an unforgettable Roman Workshop last Thursday. The children explored the legendary founding of Rome and brought history to life through engaging drama, reenacting key moments from Roman history. They had the unique opportunity to handle replica ancient artefacts and even try on Roman armour, helping them to better understand what life was like for people living in the Roman Empire. They also learnt and practised Latin phrases that would have been used in Ancient Rome. The day was filled with fun as they played traditional games that Roman children might have enjoyed, including balancing a small item on the back of their hand and taking part in a strength challenge. A highlight for many was taking part in a mock battle, where they worked together to form a testudo (tortoise formation) using their shields. The workshop was led by Ancient Visitor, whose engaging and knowledgeable approach captivated the children throughout the day. It was a fantastic learning experience and the children came away with a deeper understanding and enthusiasm for Roman history.

Bradford Bulls Assembly 16th Apr 2026

On Wednesday, the Bradford Bulls rugby league schools' team visited Ley Top to deliver an assembly about their work. A highlight for the children was the chance to meet one of the mascots, Bull Boy! From next week, their coaches will be delivering after school clubs to some KS2 children (watch out for sign-up via Arbor!) and we hope to continue working closely with them in future to get more and more children interested in trying out something new!

Ley Top celebrated World Book Day with a strong focus on reading across the whole day. Each class focused on one key book, linked to their class name or to an author from that region. Children spent time reading the text and talking about the characters, settings and main events. All activities were linked closely to reading, including making predictions, sharing ideas and short pieces of writing based on their book. A highlight of the day was the paired reading session. For half an hour, older children read with younger children from across the school. They helped them with reading words and using expression, while younger children listened carefully and joined in. The session was calm, focused and thoroughly enjoyed by all. The day helped to build confidence and a love of reading across the school.

Naz Shah MP visits our Breakfast Club 30th Mar 2026

Today we were joined at Breakfast Club by Naz Shah MP who came to see what is on offer for our children and also to hear more about how we will be making it free to access for all our families after the Easter Break. She joined in with all the activities on offer including crafts, sprots and games as well as chatting to the children in attendance. If you would like your child to join our Breakfast Club you can book a space through 'Clubs' on your Arbor app and remember, after Easter it is completely free.

Our swimming pool has arrived! 30th Mar 2026

Children in Years 4 and 5 will be having daily swimming lessons next term and today, the swimming pool has arrived onsite. It is currently being filled before the heating is switched on so that it is ready for Monday 13th April. Ambassadors take part in the Great British Spring Clean around our community 26th Mar 2026

Ley Top Ambassadors today took part in the Great British Spring Clean organised by Keep Britain Tidy. Working with representatives from Bradford District Council they collected almost 10 sacks of rubbish from the areas around school in order to create a more pleasant environment for our community. Well done to them all and thank you for making a positive difference in Allerton.

ZooLab visit to Nursery, Early Years and Year 4 26th Mar 2026

Children got up close and personal with a range of animals today when ZooLab visited school. Spiders, snakes, snails and some more cuddly animals were introduced to the children so that they could learn about their needs, how they have adapted to their natural environments and how we can protect them for future generations. Children (and staff) were given the opportunity to handle some of the creatures with some choosing to keep a ‘safe distance’.

Key Stage 2 children learn CPR 25th Mar 2026

Children in Key Stage 2 took part in a CPR awareness assembly and workshops, learning about how simple actions can help save a life. The children were introduced to what CPR is; why it is important; and what to do in an emergency, including calling for help. During the assembly and workshops, children had the opportunity to practise chest compressions on CPR training dummies. It was fantastic to see how engaged and enthusiastic the children were as they learned these important life-saving skills. We are very proud of the interest and maturity all children showed throughout the sessions and it was a valuable opportunity for them to understand how they could help someone in an emergency.

The final day for our group of children who have been visiting Nell Bank gave an opportunity for pond dipping, experiments with water, team building activities, crafting with natural resources, toasting marshmallows over a fire and a reflection on the three days. All the children had a great time.

Nell Bank Week 1 11th Mar 2026

A group of children from Year 4, 5 and 6 spent the first of 3 days at Nell Bank Outdoor Education Centre in Ilkley taking part in activities including pond dipping, enjoying a woodland walk and making memory sticks. At the end of the day there was also a little time to burn off any left-over energy with some team building time on the adventure playground. The second day will take place next week and we know that the children are really looking forward to it. Check bank next week for an update.

Year 3 Educational Visit to Magna 8th Mar 2026

Year 3 had a fantastic day on their trip to the Magna Science Centre on Wednesday. The day began with a magnet workshop where the children explored magnets and forces. They investigated how magnets attract and repel, made predictions, and tested their ideas through exciting investigations. This was a fantastic start for our upcoming forces unit in science. After the workshop, the children explored the different areas of the centre: Earth, Air, Fire, and Water. Each zone gave them the chance to get hands-on with science. They explored wind and movement in the Air zone; learned more about rocks in the Earth zone which linked to our current geography unit; experimented with water flow in the Water zone; and saw the power of heat and energy in the Fire zone. One of the highlights of the day was the Big Melt show. This special-effects demonstration recreated the heat of a steel furnace using dramatic lights, sparks, and sound to show how metal was melted in the past at the factory. All of the children were brilliant throughout the trip. Staff, members of the public and other schools all commented on how respectful and responsible they were. We were very proud of them. It was a great day full of learning, curiosity and fun.

Tasif Khan - World Champion Boxer visits Year 5 and 6 6th Mar 2026

World champion boxer, Tasif Khan, visited school today to speak to children in Year 5 and 6 about his experiences growing up in Bradford and his professional boxing career. Tasif gave them many examples of the challenges he faced growing up to become a World Champion. His quote Impossible becoming I'm Possible was well received by the children as he gave them inspiration to follow their dreams. Tasif was happy to share his belts with children getting the chance to get up close to genuine championship gold.

Community Orchard planting with Rooted In and the Fruit Works Co-operative 25th Feb 2026

Today, the Ley Top Ambassadors were invited to plant the first 6 trees in the Allerton Community Orchard on the Millenium Green. The orchard is a project in collaboration with Rooted In and The Fruit Works Co-Operative. The Ambassadors learned about fruit trees, prepared the holes and planted 6 native apple trees that will, over time, provide free fruit for the Allerton Community. They also had lots of fun naming the worms they found - Tom and Jerry, Josiah and William were then safely rehomed with the trees.

Virtual Reality knife crime awareness session 24th Feb 2026

A group of children from Year 6 were selected to trial a new initiative led by PCSO Danny Mynott using virtual reality headsets to explore the dangers and impacts of knife crime on young people, their families and friends. They took part in a workshop then entered the virtual world to consider how knife crime affects young people and their families. We hope to run further session in the near future to help all our children with this important safeguarding awareness experience before they move on to secondary school.

Last week, we had a sessions with Mr. Morrison, who spent time working with both Year 2 classes. Together, we read and acted out the much‑loved story The Gruffalo. The children thoroughly enjoyed the experience and greatly benefited from working so closely with Mr. Morrison. We look forward to working with him again next half term.

This week, Year 3 met their inhabitants that had been added to the aquarium. They also tested the balance of the aquarium and completed their water tests as well as learned some of the basics of photosynthesis when adding plants to the aquarium.

Year 4 step back in time at Jorvik Viking Centre 5th Feb 2026

Year 4 had an exciting and unforgettable trip to the JORVIK Viking Centre in York last week. The children loved stepping back in time as they explored Viking life, travelling through a reconstructed Viking village and learning all about how people lived, worked and traded over 1,000 years ago. They took part in engaging workshops where they dug for archaeological artefacts and discovered how these finds help us understand the past. They also enjoyed learning about Viking battle tactics, working together and showing great focus and teamwork. There were some brilliant questions asked and all the children showed fantastic enthusiasm throughout the day. It was a wonderful opportunity to bring our history learning to life, and the children were a credit to the school with their excellent behaviour.

Fish Keeper Fry Week 3 - Our first inhabitants have arrived 1st Feb 2026

Our first tank inhabitants have arrived at school, Cherry Shrimps. These small creatures (currently only about 5mm long will grow to 3cm in their lifetime, feeding on the algae that grows on the plants and the food that the fish miss helping to keep our tank looking clean. We have also added some plants to give the shrimps somewhere to hide and the fish some natural vegetation to eat.

Year 3 have begun their fishkeeping journey with the first in a series of lessons on how to set up, maintain and enjoy an aquarium. Over the next 8 weeks, Mr Gawthorpe - our Headteacher - will be teaching the children about the joys of fishkeeping and the responsibility it comes with. Each week, one child will be chosen as 'Fish keeper of the week'. Keep checking back on the website for all the updates as we get ready to welcome our first residents.

It was lovely to see so many family members join Penguin Patrol to share in their learning for our first family session. Children took great pride in sharing their classroom environment and resources. It was really well attended and we look forward to many more successful events.

National Year of Reading at Ley Top - the story begins 15th Jan 2026

We are excited to share that Ley Top are celebrating 2026 as the Year of Reading! Recently, our Alpine Achievers enjoyed a special visit from Mr. Morrison, who inspired the children to develop a love for reading. Together, they explored a much-loved story, The Gruffalo. Each child took on a different character and brought the story to life through role play. Over the coming weeks, Mr. Morrison will return to help us create our very own class story adventure. The children will be reading, acting out scenes, and even adding a soundtrack to Grandad’s Camper. We look forward to sharing their creative journey with you!

COMING SOON - Fishkeeper Fry 11th Jan 2026

Thanks to Adam at Maidenhead Aquatics on York Road in Leeds, children in Year 3 will shortly be taking part in a curriculum enrichment activity as they support Mr Gawthorpe in setting up and maintaining a school fish tank as part of the Fishkeeper Fry programme for schools. Over 8 weeks the children will learn how to set up a tank for tropical fish, all about their needs, how to maintain the aquarium to make sure the fish stay healthy and to learn about the joys of fishkeeping. Regular updates will be posted on the news page so make sure you check back regularly for updates and why not have a look at the tank next time you visit school.

Year 6 Fire safety presentation 7th Jan 2026

Year 6 took part in a fire safety presentation from fire fighters from West Yorkshire Fire and Rescue. They were given advice about fire safety, contacting the emergency services appropriately and making a fire plan. Some children got an opportunity to try on a fire fighters kit. A big thank you to the fire fighters who gave up their time to deliver this important safeguarding talk.
